Our last choice isn’t technically a minivan, but it ticks many of the same boxes. Ford introduced the Flex to help replace its Freestar minivan, hoping that this boxy vehicle would win the hearts of people who wanted a van without sliding doors. 

It didn’t. People continued to pick either the extra interior space of a van or a more traditionally styled SUV. But if you prioritize people-hauling over maximum cargo space, the Flex is a posh box with a quiet ride and cushy seats. And this largely forgotten vehicle is cheap today; you can find a relatively new 2013 model for less than $10,000.

The Dodge Caravan pioneered the minivan segment in 1984, and 30 years later, it had become a bigger, more powerful, and more flexible vehicle than its original predecessor. Known exclusively as the Grand Caravan (the shorter-length standard Caravan went away after 2007), this van boasts a smooth ride, a modern infotainment system, and useful Stow ’n Go seats; the second and third rows disappeared into bins in the floor. 

The Grand Caravan was popular among rental agencies and other commercial fleets, which means there’s ample inventory of relatively new Grand Caravans for $10,000 or less. We think you’ll find examples from around 2014. The vehicle doesn’t have the industry’s highest reliability reputation, but at least you’ll be able to afford a van that still has more of its life left in it — unlike vans that have already been on the road for more than a decade.

If you like the Grand Caravan, you can also broaden your search to include the Chrysler Town & Country. It has slightly more upscale styling touches than the Grand Caravan, but it otherwise has most of the same pros and cons. It’s an imperfect van with some notable strengths and a compelling value advantage. 

You can also broaden your search further still to the rare but potentially desirable Volkswagen Routan, another sibling of the Grand Caravan and Town & Country. The Routan has a dressier Euro-styled dashboard and exterior, along with slightly firmer steering. But it sold in a tiny fraction of its cousins’ volume.

Another relatively inexpensive used minivan is the 2013 Kia Sedona. It’s part of the van’s second generation, sold from 2006 through 2014, and it transformed the Sedona from mere adequacy to a leader for its driving experience, interior ambiance, and safety performance. 

Still, it’s not one of the best-known names in the minivan segment, and that means you can get a comparatively new model for under $10,000. We think you can comfortably find a 2013 model in that price range. We even saw a few examples of the 2015 Sedona, which introduced a new level of refined luxury; if that’s your priority, look carefully for this newer model or be prepared to spend a little more.

The Toyota Sienna is a family favorite, and the 2011 model year introduced the generation that remained on sale until just last year. Compared with its predecessor, this redesign brought more modern styling, a more solid-feeling ride, and more comfortable seats. 

Most Siennas under $10,000 are older than the 2011 model year, but for some buyers, it will be worth looking a little harder to get these upgrades. Just don’t count on the Toyota reputation to save you from any repairs; remember, for this little money, you’re looking at a decade-old van that’s likely already served previous families for 150,000 miles or more.

The 2011 Honda Odyssey was a groundbreaking van with truly spacious seating for eight passengers, a superb balance of ride and handling, and uniquely sporty styling that still looks fresh today. 

And bargain hunters are in luck: We even found some 2011 Odysseys for less than $10,000 today. We’ll redouble our note of caution about reliability, though: Not only is this van as old as similarly priced Toyota Siennas, but the Odyssey proved more trouble-prone than the Sienna in some reliability surveys. That’s a double-whammy of age and reliability concerns. Still, if you get one that’s in decent shape, it’s the $10,000 minivan we’d be happiest to drive.

This earlier Sienna generation is another top choice among minivans under $10,000. Though it’s not as fancy as the 2011 to 2020 model, the 2004 to 2010 Sienna was considered the “Lexus of minivans” at the time. 

It has a smooth engine and a quiet ride, along with plenty of space. And if you get an upper-level model, you’ll get glossy woodgrain interior trim that shook up the minivan segment at a time when dull gray plastic was the norm. As we mentioned before, though, keep your expectations in check and don’t assume a 2010 Sienna will provide another decade of trouble-free service.

As with the Sienna, we’ll also show you the previous-generation Honda Odyssey, which is more widely available than the newer 2011 model. The 2010 Odyssey finished off a generation that had been on sale since 2005, and it was characterized by an unusually firm ride mixed with even livelier handling than its successor. 

On the flip side, the 2010 Odyssey isn’t as cushy or as spacious as the next-generation model. And, of course, the used ones you’ll find have spent another year in potentially grueling minivan service.

The 2012 Nissan Quest was a quirky van that sold poorly but delighted many auto critics for its unusual design. Tall and boxy, it’s styled like a Japanese car rather than an ordinary American minivan; its dashboard also borrows cues from Nissan’s Infiniti luxury division. The Quest also has the convenience of second- and third-row seats that fold easily flat without being removed from the car. 

Still, despite its boxy looks, the Quest had significantly less room inside than similarly sized vans. And it handled about as well as it looked. You won’t find many Quests for sale for less than $10,000 because not many people bought one in the first place. But if this unusual van strikes a chord with you, check it out.

Some people like to grouse that today’s minivans forgot how to be “mini.” They’re far smaller than commercial-grade full-size vans, but they’re not small cars. The exception is the Mazda5, a compact wagon with sliding doors and three rows of seats.

The Mazda5 isn’t for everyone. It seats only six passengers and has little extra cargo space when doing so. Its crash-test scores were also mediocre.
